How to Prep for Laser Season: Your Guide to Photofacial at The LoftMD

As summer winds down, laser season begins and if you’re considering treatments like Photofacials, SkinTight, or SkinClear, now is the time to start prepping your skin. At The LoftMD, we believe real, lasting results come from intentional care. That’s why our approach to laser treatments begins long before the first pulse of light touches your skin.

Here’s everything you need to know about what a Photofacial is, how to properly prepare, and what to expect before and after your treatment.

What Is a Photofacial?

Our LoftMD Photofacial is a non-ablative laser treatment that helps address visible signs of aging, discoloration, and texture irregularities — all with minimal downtime. It’s completely non-invasive and can be customized to your skin’s needs.

Why Skin Conditioning Comes First

Laser treatments like Photofacial are powerful corrective tools, but they work best when your skin is already healthy, resilient, and well-supported. That’s why we recommend starting with a LoftMD Membership, which includes monthly facial treatments and curated clinical skincare to prep your skin over the course of at least 3 months.

Think of it as training your skin. When it’s properly conditioned, your skin will respond better to more advanced treatments, recover faster, and see more noticeable, long-lasting results.

Laser Consultation Required

Before booking your first laser session, you’ll need to schedule a Laser Consultation at least two weeks in advance. During this appointment, our clinical team will evaluate your skin, review your goals, and make sure you’re a good candidate for Photofacial. We’ll also walk you through a personalized pre- and post-treatment plan.

How to Prepare for Your Photofacial

Proper prep is essential for safe, effective results. Here’s how to get your skin laser-ready:

  • No sun exposure or tanning (including self-tanners) for at least 3 weeks before treatment.

  • Stop Retinol, exfoliants, antibiotics, and other actives 3 days prior to your appointment.

  • Discontinue Eventone Serum 3 days before treatment and resume 7 days after.

  • Arrive with clean skin. No makeup, SPF, or moisturizer. Bring a wide-brim hat for post-treatment sun protection.

  • Let us know if you’re prone to cold sores — we’ll prescribe an antiviral as needed.

Adhering to these guidelines sets the stage for your best results and minimizes the risk of irritation or complications.

What to Expect After Your Photofacial

Downtime is minimal, but you’ll notice some changes in the first week:

Day 1–2:

Skin may feel tight, dry, and sunburned. Brown spots may darken (this is normal). Use only post-treatment products and avoid makeup unless it’s a gentle, water-based powder.

Days 3–7:

Dark spots may look like “coffee grounds” as the skin naturally exfoliates. No picking, scrubbing, or exfoliating — let the skin shed on its own. Continue using soothing, hydrating products.

Day 8 and beyond:

You can usually resume your normal skincare routine, including actives like retinol, after provider clearance. At this point, your skin will begin to look noticeably clearer, brighter, and more even.

Aftercare Reminders

To maintain results and continue improving skin health, we may recommend:

And remember — SPF is non-negotiable. We recommend SkinBetter Tone Smart SPF or ColoreScience Face Shield Flex SPF 50 for mineral protection that blends seamlessly into your skin. Keep your skin covered and protected during healing, especially if you’ll be outdoors.
